Beginning Therapists in North Carolina

WHY WE EXIST

Our Mission

Finding the right supervisor as you move toward full licensure can feel overwhelming, especially when you are just beginning to navigate the next stage of your professional journey. Our mission is to make that process clearer and more accessible by offering a curated directory of qualified clinical supervisors across a range of license types and specialties.

We are committed to connecting beginning therapists with supervisors who can provide meaningful guidance, supportive mentorship, and the clinical insight needed to help you grow in confidence and competence. Our hope is that, through this resource, you feel more supported as you take each step toward full licensure and long-term success in the field.

"Choosing a supervisor is one of the most important early decisions you will make in your development as a therapist. Supervision is not just a requirement for licensure—it is the space where you begin to shape your clinical identity, build confidence, and learn how to think like a clinician.

A good supervisor does more than review your cases. They help you slow down your clinical thinking, deepen your conceptualization, and expand your understanding of what is happening beneath the surface in the therapy room. They also provide support as you navigate the emotional weight of the work, which is something graduate training often doesn’t fully prepare you for.

The right supervisory relationship should feel both supportive and growth-oriented. You want someone who is approachable and encouraging, but also willing to challenge you in a way that helps you grow rather than stay comfortable. Over time, this relationship becomes a foundation for how you will show up with your own clients.

It is also important to remember that not all supervision experiences are the same. Supervisors vary in style, training, and theoretical orientation. Finding someone whose approach aligns with your learning needs—and who is invested in your development as a clinician, not just your hours—can make a meaningful difference in your growth and confidence.

Ultimately, strong supervision helps bridge the gap between being a student and becoming a competent, ethical, and grounded therapist. Taking the time to find the right fit is not just worthwhile—it is essential for the kind of clinician you want to become."

Completing Your Program

As you near the completion of graduate school, you begin exploring the next steps toward full licensure, including where you want to work, the populations you hope to serve, and the type of clinical setting that best fits your goals. At the same time, you must complete all academic and clinical requirements necessary to graduate from your program.

Obtaining Associate Licensure

After graduation, you begin the process of working with your licensing board to complete the requirements necessary for licensure. This stage often takes several months, as graduate programs must submit transcripts, documentation, and verification materials to the board. For many new clinicians, the process can feel confusing, lengthy, and stressful while waiting for approval to move forward in their professional journey.

Finding A Supervisor

This is where we step in to support you. Finding the right supervisor can be challenging, and many beginning therapists only learn about supervisors through word of mouth. Our goal is to help guide you through this stage of the process by providing access to qualified supervisor options and making the journey toward licensure feel more clear, connected, and manageable.
